  Back In Contact

If you have visited the English Department's webpage in the past you may have noticed that Contact , our newsletter, had not been updated regularly. This of course was due to the amount of work its members had with other responsibilities (committee work, coursework, and changes in faculty) Maintenance of a newsletter, and an electronic newsletter at that, is an arduous task, nonetheless, the department has made the decision to bring Contact up again, and to do its utmost to follow up accordingly each semester. So, we can say that Contact is back in contact and ready to inform the community on what's happening in the English Department at Cayey, and reaching out to students and faculty alike. So check us out and keep in Contact!

 What is Contact?

There may be many asking this question and because so many changes have occurred in the recent past a brief history of this newsletter may be necessary. Contact is the English Department's electronic newsletter, created in 1997 and run by the department's outreach and recruitment committee. Its purpose is to inform the university community about activities, events, news, and other useful information. It also has as its mission reaching out to potential English majors among students who have not yet decided what academic field to pursue, or are considering changing their major. Another purpose is to give English majors a venue where they can find useful information pertaining and affecting them directly. Contact is likewise a means where both faculty and students can submit articles that may be of interest to its readers. In other words, it is a means of breaching the gap between students and professors giving equal participation to its components because it is our department; a philosophy that the English Department at Cayey has had perennially.

Contact is not the first effort of “journalistic endeavors” (in quotations because it is not really journalism per se, merely informative writing) at this department. In 1982 the department (in collaboration with its majors) created a magazine, Phoebus Light , which circulated for several years, publishing works by students and faculty: poems, short stories, essays, light academic studies and analyses, university news and information, humorous pieces, and drawings. It was a publication that exposed what students and faculty were doing with English. Contact derives from this previous publication, only this time, electronically— another department characteristic, its affinity with and for technology: Welcome to the Cyber Age! Another purpose for having Contact.

What Can I do with an English Degree?”

This is one of the possible questions incoming first year students ask themselves because many perceive English simply as a school subject, thus equating studying English with becoming teachers. That is only one possibility. Yes, if you pursue a B.A in English, you may plan to follow a career in teaching, but studying English can open other possibilities as well. An English major has currency in unexpected areas in today's marketplace. A degree in English could lead to careers in other fields. Our alumni are pursuing careers in Law / Commerce / Journalism / and the arts. Here is a shortlist of possibilities:

Advertising Law
Advertising Journalism
Book publishing Journalism
Business ventures (Entrepreneurship) Teaching
Career counseling Tourism industries
Translation Federal/State Government
Cultural studies agencies
Other fields

Interested in an English Major? Come by the English Department and find out more information concerning the possibilities or call (787)738-2161 extension 2188.

Achievements

Since our last publication several faculty members have reached important personal and professional goals:

Professor Mario Medina obtained his Ph.D. from Indiana University of Pennsylvannia Technical Writing and Technology. Dr. Medina has been named director of OTD (Oficina de Tecnología para la Docencia). In his new role he directs the university's faculty training program and will be providing us knowledge on how to incorporate the latest technological advances to enhance our classes and academic programs. Congratulations, Dr. Mario (Super Mario?)!

Congratulations to Professor Ernesto Castillo who obtained his Ph.D in Translation from the University of California . Dr. Castillo will be a vital resource to our new track in Translation. Dr. Castillo and his wife Jill also became the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy, Diego Armando, whom we already see around the department kicking up a storm and stealing hearts…Gooooal Diego! Congratulations team Castillo!

Professor Aurora Rivera was named Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and is now working alongside Dean Waldo Torres and Raúl Pérez Sandós. Congratulations Dr. Rivera!

Professor Isabel Garayta has just returned from Sabbatical. Dr. Garayta just completed one year of research on using translated texts in the classroom across the disciplines. She also is cornerstone to our track in translations. She is now sharing her work with other departments, and is enlightening us all…in multiple languages. Welcome back, Bienvenida, Bienvenu, Benvenuto, Willkommen, and Bravo Isa!

Other important achievements for the department were the positions obtained by Professors María Inés Rodríguez (Basic English Coordinator & Mentor of Assessment Project at the Institutional level) along with Dr. Nelson Vicente; Elena González as Renovación Curricular Project Coordinator, and José Santos is now MALC Coordinator, congratulations to all!

Professor María Rodríguez offered an excellent workshop to the university's faculty during the Desarrollo de Facultad day in September: “Integrating Language Arts & Research”.

Together they will be working with representatives from three departments: Education, Biology, and Spanish.

We wish a warm welcome to Professor Chantelle MacPhee our newest colleague this year. Warm welcomes to Professors: Susanne Thomas, Tatiana Tagirova, Evelyn Pérez, Nellie Vázquez, and David Lizardi, who joined the department within the last two years.
